Beach art

Everyone knows about making sand castles at the beach but there are lots of other fun art related projects one can do with any age kid but adults, too. The best part is you don’t need a thing except a willingness to gather materials and a lot of imagination.

We found this lovely lady left behind on the beach one day a few weeks ago….I have no idea who made her but they obviously lavished a lot of love and care on her.

012I often like to do some rock and sand art with the kids I teach in the summer and they come up with some amazing pieces. One day we made rock turtles and these are some of the ones the kids, ages 9-12, came up with.

019The next few days on the Cape will be picture perfect for all sorts of outdoor activities but if you find yourself at the beach, why not make a rock and sand picture of your own?

A free digital download for you!

I am presently working on a coloring and activity book with a Cape Cod theme and while doing my programs this summer came up with a small, easily downloadable booklet called “My Cape Cod Beach.Book.” It is printed on both sides of one piece of paper, cut in half and either tied together with string or yarn or stapled. It fits easily into a pocketbook or backpack and is great for those times kids have to spend waiting….

Here’s a quick picture tutorial of how to put your booklet together. Ordering information is at the end of this post.  Continue reading

Spider Crabs!

Spider crabs are very common on the Cape. They are pretty docile compared to other crabs and are not predators so their claws aren’t very big. Don’t be fooled, they can still give a pinch if they are annoyed or threatened but mostly they mind their own business.
Also called decorator crabs these ground crawling crabs of
ten cover themselves with mud and seaweed to help them camouflage better. They are scavengers though they also eat bits and pieces of seaweed and probably small critters that get caught up in the mix.
Other than the harmless and fun hermit crabs kids lov
e to catch spider crabs are probably the easiest crabs for
children to handle.
