Cruising the great marsh of Barnstable…

Over the last weekend I was lucky enough to ride the high tide into the creeks and channels of the great marsh of Barnstable on The Horseshoe Crab, the boat for the Barnstable Harbor Ecotours. I had been asked to fill in as a leader for a trip so was going out with some other leaders to get a lay of a land and to become familiar with the kind of tour they were looking for.

The views of the flooded marsh were simply spectacular….

We could see the dunes of Sandy Neck in the distance and got a great view of the Halfway House, the cottage owned by the town where I’ve stayed with different art groups…(we have another overnight coming up for September 21)

We also got great views of the Handy Gunning Shack of “The Little House on Sandy Neck” fame.

Sprinkle in a few dozen egrets and herons, a thousand or so tree swallows and dozens of migrating shorebirds and it’s a great trip! We also head out along the Sandy Neck cottage colony and get a great close up view of the lighthouse.

I will be leading trips on Mondays through at least Columbus Day so if you’d like to join me, contact Joe at Barnstable Harbor Ecotours.

  1. Hi there–I believe Monday’s trip is at 10 a.m. but you have to go through barnstableecotours.com to reserve a spot. Each Monday is a different time but the website has the schedule 😉
